Magnetic Inclination and Intensity

Dynon's EFIS products require you to input your local magnetic inclination and intensity as part of the magnetic compass calibration. To determine these values at the location where you'll be doing the calibration, follow these steps.

Note that this procedure only needs to be done once, prior to magnetic calibration; moving the aircraft to another location does not require repeating this procedure.

IMPORTANT: The two values needed from the following page are INCLINATION and TOTAL FIELD. Horizontal Intensity is NOT used.

Visit the Magnetic Field Estimator at the Geophysical Data Center run by the NOAA (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/#igrfwmm).

  1. Enter the approximate latitude, longitude, and elevation of your home airfield. The right side fo the page ("Lookup Location") can be used to calculate latitude and longitude input for the main "Calculate Magnetic Field" computer on the left side of the page. If you use this Lookup Location feature, press the Get Location button to turn your zip code or Country/City input in a latitude/longitude location on the left side of the page.
  2. Check that the Latitutde and Longitude are not zero after using the Lookup Location tool if you've used it. Click the "Calculate" button.
  3. In the table of results, you will see a box labled "Inclination", displaying an angle and degrees in minutes (e.g., 69° 29').
  4. Round the inclination angle to the nearest 1/2 degree (30' = 0.5°), and enter it into your EFIS product via SETUP > MORE > MORE > MAGINC.
  5. In the table of results, you will see a box labled "Total Field", displaying a value in nT (e.g., 54,680.0 nT)
  6. Round the intensity value to the nearest tens digit, and enter it into your EFIS product via SETUP > MORE > MORE > MAGINT.
