Dynon SkyView HDX System Software

The software on this page is for Experimental and Light Sport aircraft only. It is not approved for STC-approved installations. If you have an STC-approved Dynon Certified system please visit the Dynon Certified page.

The downloads on this page are complete system software upgrades for SkyView. If you are looking for routine monthly airport/aviation/obstacles data, go to the Database Download Page instead.

There are two ways to update the software on your SkyView system, depending on your existing software version and where you are in the world. Method 1 packages all of the most commonly downloaded files into packages that are available for US and Western Europe systems. Method 2 requires that you download and load multiple files to your SkyView system individually.

System Software (HDX)

Two Ways To Update Your SkyView HDX system software

SkyView displays work with USB flash drives containing a maximum of 32GB memory. Higher capacity drives can not be properly formatted in the required FAT32 file system.

Method 1: SkyView Update Package (Us and Western Europe Only)
Use this method if all of the following are true:
  1. You live in either the US or Western Europe.
  2. Your SkyView system already has version 4.0 or greater on it..
  3. You have not created your own engine sensor definitions via a custom .SFG file (if you do not know what this means, it likely does not apply to you).
These packaged updates should be loaded onto each display individually.

SkyView v14 contains a software update to the SV-XPNDR-26X transponders to support SV-GPS-2020 operation. This update also enables the continued reception of TIS-B (ADS-B-based) traffic after early 2016. This update is not automatically sent to the transponder, and must be manually started after updating to SkyView v14 by going to the TRANSPONDER SETUP menu in SkyView.See the SkyView System Installation Guide for details on how to update your transponder.

Customers should also update the low, very low, and regional high resolution databases with if they haven't since Sept 2014.

For customers who live outside the US or Western Europe, or otherwise wish to update the software and databases of their SkyView system individually. Please read each section below in its entirety to determine whether or not each file should be loaded on your SkyView display(s).

Engine Sensor Definitions for SkyView
This file updates the engine sensor calibrations used by the EMS. This file will not change your sensor settings, red lines, alarms, layouts, or the pins chosen in the Sensor Input Mapping menu. There are occasional improvements to sensor characterizations. Unless you are using a custom engine sensor definitions file of your own creation (if you aren't sure, you probably do not have a custom file), you should keep this file up-to-date. Click the link below to download it. This file must be loaded to each SkyView display individually.

Dynon SkyView Software and Database Update Instructions

A SkyView update may require one or more different files to be downloaded and loaded onto your display.

Updating your SkyView software may require one or more different files to be downloaded and installed:
  • SkyView Software, which is updated as Dynon releases new features and improvements. These are typically released a few times a year.
  • Engine Sensor Definitions, This file updates the engine sensor calibrations used by the EMS. It adds support for new sensor types and occasionally contains improvements for existing sensors. This file will not change your sensor settings, red lines, alarms, layouts, or the pins chosen your Engine Monitor Setup. Keep this file up-to-date unless you are using sensor definitions of your own design.
There are a variety of databases that ensure that your navigation and other situational awareness tools are current and up-to-date. Those include the following:

Routinely Updated Databases
  • The Navigation/Obstacle Database, which is updated regularly as the data expires (every 28 days in the US).
  • En-route charts, Airport Diagrams, and Procedures: These are available for multiple third-party providers. They are updated regularly. Unlike most other databases, these reside on a USB memory stick which must remain connected to your SkyView display to be used.

Infrequently updated databases
  • High Resolution Terrain Database, for your region of the world. This database is updated rarely (once ever since SkyView's 2009 release, in Sept 2014. North America high resolution terrain is pre-loaded. Customers outside this area must load the appropriate region to replace this if needed, and is normally required only once.
  • Very Low Resolution Terrain Database Typically only needs to be loaded once on systems that were shipped prior to the availability of Very Low Resolution Terrain Database support in SkyView Version 3.0 in March 2011. Comes preloaded on all systems shipped since March 2011. This database is updated rarely (once ever since SkyView's 2009 release, in Sept 2014).
  • Low Resolution Terrain Database. Comes preloaded on all SkyView systems. This database is updated rarely (once ever since SkyView's 2009 release, in Sept 2014).
  • Base Map Database for your region of the world. This database is rarely updated. North America Base Map region is pre-loaded on units shipped with SkyView 4.0 or later on them (September 2011). Customers outside this area must load the appropriate region to replace this if needed, and is normally required only once.
As a general summary, the steps you will need are:
  1. Download New files to your PC.
  2. Transfer the files to a USB stick. Files must be in the "root" of the USB stick. In other words, they can not be in a folder or directory.
  3. Power up your SkyView.
  4. Insert the USB stick into a SkyView USB port.
  5. Use the SkyView Setup Menu to load the New files.
  6. Reboot SkyView.
  7. Some files need to be loaded on each display, while others need only be loaded on one SkyView display in a system (they synchronize automatically). The SkyView Software Downloads Page indicates which of these procedures is appropriate for each file type.
Before You Start: SkyView databases are kept up-to-date by updating a small set of database files. This page describes these update procedures and has download links for these files for US data only. Please read this page in its entirety to ensure that you understand all of the instructions before updating your SkyView system.

All files are loaded to your SkyView system via a USB memory stick. A suitable USB memory stick comes with your SkyView system, but any commonly-available USB memory stick with enough free space will work.

SkyView displays work with USB flash drives containing a maximum of 32GB memory. Higher capacity drives can not be properly formatted in the required FAT32 file system.

Update Instructions:
Updates should be performed with the system connected to an external (aircraft or bench) power source. They should not be done using the optional backup battery exclusively.
  1. ON YOUR PC: Using the guidance on the SkyView Software Downloads Page, determine which files you need to download for your update. Save them to your computer, and then copy them to the USB memory stick. Files must be in the "root" of the USB stick. In other words, they can not be in a folder or directory.
  2. IN THE AIRPLANE: Move the memory stick to any of the 3 USB ports on one of your SkyView Displays.
  3. SETUP MENU: All update procedures are done in SkyView's Setup Menu. To enter the Setup Menu, hold down buttons 7 and 8 (the right two buttons) for a few seconds.
  4. System Software INSTALL: Navigate to SETUP > SYSTEM SOFTWARE >Upgrade System Software.
  5. Load the New SkyView Firmware Release from your USB stick. The SkyView Display will reboot when it has updated and will continue to update your other devices (ADAHRS and EMS Modules).
  6. CAUTION: If you backed up your system, there will be a backup file on your USB stick as well. Be careful NOT to upload that file accidentally.
  7. INSTALL OTHER FILES THAT YOU'VE DOWNLOADED: Navigate to SETUP > SYSTEM SOFTWARE >LOAD FILES...
  8. Load each of the other New files from your USB stick, one at a time. The order that you load the files to the screen does not matter.
  9. When finished loading all files, power reboot the system by powering down the Display and re-starting.
  10. Repeat 2-9 on all of the other Displays in your SkyView network.
  11. When finished, confirm the following: All devices and modules should be listed as "READY" under the SETUP>NETWORK SETUP> NETWORK STATUS menu. If all devices are not listed, go back to SETUP>NETWORK SETUP>CONFIGURE to reconfigure the SkyView Network. If you have two screens in your SkyView system, you will definitely need to configure the SkyView network again for all of the screens and modules to be seen. This can be done from either screen.
